CHINESE MURAL ART: A CULTURAL TRIBUTE BY ROLLS-ROYCE
In a fusion of history, heritage, and handcrafted artistry, Rolls-Royce unveils a remarkable trio of Bespoke motor cars, inspired by the legendary Dunhuang mural paintings — an ode to over a thousand years of Chinese spiritual and artistic expression. Commissioned exclusively through Private Office Shanghai, this cultural celebration arrives in the form of three masterfully curated models: the Phantom Extended, Black Badge Cullinan, and Black Badge Spectre.
As explained by Shuai Feng, Bespoke Designer at Private Office Shanghai:
“These artworks, created across dynasties, reflect the abstract ideals that have shaped our country’s civilisation… This tribute reflects Rolls-Royce’s creative dialogue with China in a youthful and contemporary manner.”
DUNHUANG: A MASTERPIECE IMMORTALIZED
Situated on the ancient Silk Road, the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang stand as one of humanity’s most breathtaking artistic accomplishments. These murals, carved and painted into cave walls over centuries, represent the spiritual and cultural intersection of East and West. Rolls-Royce translates this sacred legacy into a tangible experience — one that merges ancient visual symbolism with modern bespoke craftsmanship.
PHANTOM EXTENDED: THE LEGACY CARRIAGE
Clad in a serene two-tone finish of Ningye Purple and English White, the Phantom Extended pays homage to the Tang Dynasty skies and poetry. The Silken Spirit motif — flowing like imperial silk — is hand-painted on the C-pillar and coachline, continuing into the interior as a Bespoke Starlight Headliner featuring 1,344 fibre-optic stars and 192 shooting stars.
A captivating Gallery artwork, painted on black leather using a reinterpretation of Chinese reduction block printing, brings the apsaras (celestial beings) of Buddhist lore to life. The dual-tone cabin with Black and Cashmere Grey leather, Piano Black and Cashmere Grey Canadel wood, and stainless steel Silken Spirit inlays is a sanctuary of poetic refinement.
BLACK BADGE CULLINAN: VIBRANT SOPHISTICATION
The Black Badge Cullinan Series II debuts in a striking Danqian Pink, extending to its 23-inch forged wheels. Inside, Blushing Pink leather with 107,000 intricate perforations forms an abstract sky motif, echoing the cloudscapes above Goodwood.
The rear seats shift to Navy leather with contrasting piping, creating dual-tone drama. A glowing Silken Spirit graphic in the Bespoke Starlight Headliner links past to future, tradition to innovation, in a warm blush of light.
BLACK BADGE SPECTRE: AN ELECTRIC DREAMSCAPE
Electric meets ethereal in the Black Badge Spectre, finished in Qingshan Blue and Diamond Black, echoing the deep blues of the Dunhuang murals. The Illuminated Grille in Turchese offers a contemporary glow.
Inside, a dynamic interplay of Turchese and Black leather defines front and rear seating. From Illuminated Treadplates to Starlight Doors and another Bespoke Starlight Headliner, every detail resonates with handcrafted harmony. The Silken Spirit motif ties it all together — symbolic, spirited, and entirely bespoke.
A TIMELESS CULTURAL DIALOGUE
This collection goes beyond bespoke — it is an artistic and cultural bridge across civilizations. It proves that Rolls-Royce is more than a carmaker; it is a storyteller in steel, leather, silk, and starlight.
Through these vehicles, Rolls-Royce amplifies the power of design to preserve heritage and elevate it within contemporary contexts. The Chinese Mural Arts Commissions are not only tributes to the past but invitations to the future — where Bespoke luxury becomes a canvas for meaningful cultural exchange.
