The Blueprint for Adventure: How Ford Expedition Designers Forged a New Era of Exploration
In a world increasingly driven by connection and exploration, the all-new 2025 Ford Expedition emerges as more than a vehicle—it’s a statement. Crafted for modern adventurers, this SUV embodies thoughtful design, collaborative innovation, and an acute understanding of what people truly seek when they leave the road behind.
Far from being a mere evolution of its predecessors, the 2025 Expedition represents a revolution. Every curve, line, and feature is the result of a dedicated team of designers following what they call the “Blueprint for Adventure.” This approach offers a fascinating glimpse into the sketches, stories, and creative passion that brought this remarkable SUV to life.
Sketching the Future of Exploration
At the heart of Expedition’s design process lies a timeless tool: the pencil. Creative Designer Chad Phillips emphasizes the importance of sketching as a flexible, limitless method for exploring ideas. “Freehand sketching is very important early in the idea process because there are few limitations and lots of freedom to come up with new designs that later might need modifications,” he explains.
Exterior designer Jill Dougherty, who focused on the Tremor variant, describes sketching as “the quickest way to communicate an idea.” Whether on paper or through digital tools like 3D modeling, VR, and AR, the team continuously transforms mental concepts into visible, actionable designs. Senior Interior Designer Micah Jones adds, “Sketching is the method of taking what’s in one’s mind and making it visible for others to see.” Even with a touch of humor, Design Manager Stuart Jamieson quips, “I would be lost without a pencil and paper and my most indispensable tool, an eraser.”
Innovation That Transforms Function and Form
The 2025 Expedition’s design philosophy emphasizes both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. This is perhaps best embodied by the revolutionary Ford Split Gate.
“It’s a unique design opportunity where we got to create something that not only functions differently but also adds a distinctive look,” Dougherty explains. The Split Gate combines the convenience of a traditional liftgate with the cargo management capabilities of a pickup tailgate. Three-quarters of the gate lift like a normal SUV hatch, while the lower quarter folds down, offering unmatched versatility.
Complementing this is the reconfigurable Cargo Management System, a brainchild of the interior team led by Jones. This system transforms the cargo area into multipurpose space, whether for seating, tiered storage, or even a table. Its “Linger Longer” concept encourages owners to relax, socialize, and enjoy the moment, whether tailgating or camping.
“The process for creating it was very collaborative,” Jones notes. “Design Manager Dustin Shedlarski always challenged us with ‘that’s cool, but what else can we do?’ This pushed us to develop a full tailgating experience that continues to evolve.”
Lighting the Path to Adventure
The Expedition also integrates the exterior Zone Lighting, which illuminates four distinct zones around the vehicle. From tailgating under the stars to setting up camp, this thoughtful design ensures the adventure doesn’t end when the engine shuts off.
For off-road enthusiasts, the Tremor package enhances the SUV’s rugged capabilities. Dougherty shares her excitement: “It looks super tough with its off-road lighting, ground clearance, chunky tires, and bash plates. It allows people to go further into the wilderness than ever before.”
Collaborative Design in Every Detail
Every detail of the 2025 Expedition reflects a synergy between creativity and engineering. From taillamps to roof racks, designers like Phillips collaborated closely with engineers to ensure innovative ideas translated seamlessly into functional reality.
A striking visual hallmark is the coast-to-coast signature lighting. “It creates a sense of premium, bold strength when seen driving down the road,” Phillips explains. Dougherty adds, “It highlights the overall width of the vehicle and provides a unique down-the-road graphic.”
Inside, human-centered design reigns supreme. Jones highlights the flex-powered console, offering spontaneous storage, ergonomic comfort, and an inviting aesthetic. The interior, guided by Erwan Besancon’s design theme, is “decidedly and intentionally not truck-derived,” creating a progressive, welcoming, and luxurious cabin environment.
A Vehicle Designed to Inspire
The 2025 Ford Expedition isn’t just about transportation—it’s about experiences. From the Split Gate and Cargo Management System to the plush interior and rugged Tremor variant, every element is engineered to empower adventure, connection, and memories.
As Dougherty notes, features like the Ford Split Gate and interior cargo innovations will captivate customers. Jones emphasizes the digital enhancements and comfort-focused design, creating a “very plush place to be” for every journey.
The blueprint has been laid, the sketches realized, and the adventure awaits. The 2025 Ford Expedition stands as a testament to human ingenuity, collaboration, and the enduring power of thoughtful design.
